Tokyo’s Iconic Gundam Statue Disappearing as Netflix Film Gains Excitement

An iconic statue in Tokyo that has captured the attention of many will be taken down by the end of summer. Fans of the giant figure and the anime legacy associated with it should take note as a significant change is coming.

Netflix is developing a new film centered on the famed franchise, and it is gathering momentum with a robust production budget. With Sydney Sweeney and Jason Isaacs playing pivotal roles and a busy filming schedule underway, expectations for the movie are high.

Although the premiere date remains uncertain, one might have assumed that the enormous white RX-0 Unicorn Gundam—standing close to 20 metres tall and constructed at a 1:1 scale near a shopping centre in Odaiba—would be ideally positioned for promotional purposes. However, the reality is different; after nearly a decade on display, local reports indicate that the statue is scheduled for removal in just a couple of months.

Notably, the company behind the franchise has yet to provide an explanation for this decision. The statue has long been a major attraction, drawing visitors from around the globe and delighting onlookers with its captivating evening light displays. Situated in the Odaiba district on an artificial island, the monument is set to vanish by the end of August, likely on a permanent basis.

Other impressive renditions of these colossal figures can also be found in cities like Fukuoka and Osaka, underscoring the widespread appeal of these cultural icons.
