Robert Downey Jr. Returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Doom: An Overview of Marvel's Future Plans Unveiled at SDCC 2024
Marvel stars have given their reactions to the major announcement of Robert Downey Jr.'s return to the MCU. Downey Jr.'s return to Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con featured some massive hints about the future of the MCU.
The most significant revelation of the night was undoubtedly Robert Downey Jr.'s casting as Doctor Doom, the new major villain in Avengers 5, which has been officially titled Avengers: Doomsday. After the panel, some of the Marvel stars from Thunderbolts, who will also appear in the upcoming Avengers movies, shared their thoughts on this announcement.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus expressed her excitement, and her co-star Lewis Pullman conveyed his amazement at the news, emphasizing Downey Jr.'s importance to the Marvel universe. Downey Jr. himself made an appearance during the panel, revealing he had been hidden behind a mask after Avengers: Doomsday was hinted at. He humorously mentioned that it was a new mask but the same task.
Further during the Marvel panel, a first look at Fantastic Four was presented and a teaser trailer for Thunderbolts was also shown. Overall, Marvel Phase 5 and Phase 6 are shaping up to be incredibly exciting. Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters on May 1, 2026, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars on May 7, 2027. Thunderbolts is scheduled for release on May 2, 2025.
